Hadrian’s Wall

Trip Overview

This is a fabulous day out on Hadrian’s Wall, the world heritage site on our doorstep. We find out just who the soldiers stationed here were, why they came, what they built, and where and how they lived. The views are spectacular and the sites amazing. The exact itinerary we follow will depend on the group on the day.

Trip Itinerary

Pick up from Keswick at 09.30 we will have a quick chat about the tour and the amount you wish to walk before we head off, so as to ensure we have the day set just right for you.

We drive up to the wall and stop first of all at Banks Turret, where we get our first glimpse of Hadrian’s Wall. We will here give you the basic history of the Roman’s incursion into Britain, and chat about the purpose for the wall. We then drive up to Birdoswald Roman fort and take a walk along the wall (around 2 miles) to Gilsland via the Roman remains of Willowford Bridge.

Lunch will be at an excellent country pub close to the Wall. Please note that lunch is included in the price, but drinks over lunch are not.

Over the course of the afternoon we aim to fill in some of the history gaps and really help you to imagine the Roman way of life, so you can see the regimented forts, hear the bustling towns and markets, and really feel the history of the people who lived here nearly two thousand years ago. The exact sites we visit depend on the weather and how far you wish to walk but will include at least one fort, preferably Housesteads, the best preserved Roman fort.

Head back to Keswick

It is about an hours drive back to Keswick, so we expect to arrive at around 5.00.

Please note that all timings are approximate and it is possible we may be later back.
