Hadrian's Wall The Central Section
We take three days over the central section of Hadrian’s Wall so that time can be taken to enjoy the sites along the way and visit a number of the remains rather than walking past because we have a schedule to keep.
The walking is relatively straight forward although there are a number of short climbs and descents, some of which are steep, but we have the time to take over these and enjoy the view at the top.
Accommodation will be at a convenient Guest House and we will transfer to and from the wall via the Hadrian’s Wall AD122 bus, it’s a bit greener than everyone arriving in cars.
Banks to Walltown Crags
We start at the first really good bit of Wall where you will be given an overview of the Hadrianic period, after this we start to walk the Wall, earthworks, sections of wall, forts and Roman graffiti are all in store as are castles and an opportunity to see what life might have been like in the Roman Army.
Walltown Crags to Housesteads
Into the high country, from Walltown crags we take a rollercoaster ride along the Whin sill escarpment to Housesteads Roman Fort. We pass remains too numerous to mention and the views get more expansive as we proceed. At Housesteads we take a full tour of the fort as this is the most impressive on the Wall.
Housesteads to Chollerford
A return to Housesteads and over the Sewingshields crags before we start our descent and leave the high ground behind, At Carrawburgh a short detour take us to a Mithraic temple is followed by a gradual climb and the descent into the North Tyne valley and Chollerford.
